Event Details

  • What is STEAM?

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!

  • Who can participate?

Seldovia Village Tribe will be offering a STEAM Hiking Series throughout the summer for elementary-aged children, entering 2nd through 8th Grades. There will only be 10 slots available, due to transportation and staffing, but we will maintain a wait list.

  • When and Where?

Mondays from 10 – 4:30 pm, most weeks. There are a few special times due to tides and activities. We will be sure that all participants are made aware and reminded of any special instructions.

Drop off and pick up will be at the SVT Alaska Tribal Cache parking lot unless otherwise stated.

  • June 13th: TV Tower and Beyond – wild, edible and poisonous plant hike; cooking edible plants.
  • June 27th: Upper Barabara Creek – mastering the Seven Steps to Survival.
  • July 4th: No hike, but sign up to do the Salmon shuffle. We have t-shirts for kids.
  • July 11th: Rocky Ridge Trail to the Bumps – wildflower identification, pressing and watercolors.
  • July 18th: Mary Joyce Beach to MacDonald Spit – macroalgae and campfire cooking.
  • July 25th: Little Tutka Lagoon Hike and salmon fishing; hatchery tour.
  • August 1st: Seldovia Point to Wadsworth Creek and beyond; low tide exploration, rock hounding and fossil hunting.
  • August 8th – 10th: Red Mountain Overnights
  • What is the cost?

$10 per week. There will be no refunds, prorated fees, or scholarships available.

  • Additional Information:

Hikers need to bring a day pack with a hearty sack lunch, snacks, water bottle, rain gear, hat, gloves, rain boots, dry pants and socks, and need to dress in layers. Please try to avoid COTTON fabric as it retains water and takes a long time to dry. Quick drying fabrics, such as fleece and wool are best.
